Book 6: How to End Lookism

Note: This is a self-written story that I wrote as an assignment for high school when I was 15 in 2021. I do not actually believe in this.

The perfect way to stop the popular practice of beauty biasness, with the plus side of helping to end the spread of the Coronavirus.

Hello! Many days ago, I was walking along the hallway of a mall, and noticed a sign. It said “Do you want to be prettier? Look no further! This is the place for you!” Now obviously, this was a cosmetics store, and it was quite a popular one that carried many of the trendiest products of this season. Now after looking at this sign, I became quite distressed. Now why was I distressed, you may ask. Well, first of all, I believe that beauty should come from within, and not from the outward appearance. Second of all, it shows that society places too much value on beauty. Third of all, it makes many girls feel insecure and sad about themselves.

Some people think that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and that everybody’s definition of beauty is different. However, I disagree with this idea. I believe that beauty is a universal standard that is usually quite objective. Certain people may have their own unique preferences, but overall, most people have similar beauty standards/preferences, especially if they live in the same country or continent. The sad reality is that it is not a secret that uglier people are discriminated against in society, and even average-looking people are treated disrespectfully sometimes. Meanwhile, better-than-average looking people are almost always treated specially, with unique care and affection laid aside for them. Of course, this doesn’t apply to everybody, but it is the norm for most social situations. Recently, there have been a lot of talks and movements dedicated to endorsing and discussing beauty from the inside (the personality). After watching and reading about the beauty of personality and character, I came to the conclusion that these movements and articles just simply aren’t enough. The world is going through drastic times of beauty favoritism, and drastic times call for drastic measures.

After countless moments of pondering, I have managed to come up with an amazingly thought up and detailed plan to solve this deeply rooted issue. The answer that I have come up with is not only going to be tackling the issue of beauty bias, but also the issue of health during this time. I call it the “Healthy Lookism Filter”. It is a face mask that can be self designed by the user, and it also has an option of being surgically attached to the user’s face. It not only filters out the lookism, but it also helps improve your health, because it filters out the dirty dust and particles, and also helps protect you against the Coronavirus.

In case you don’t know, lookism is “the construction of a standard for beauty and attractiveness, and judgments made about people on the basis of how well or poorly they meet the standard.” The masks will be super comfortable to wear, and they have been specially designed to feel just like your own skin, which is quite fitting, because if you choose to go through with the surgery, then it will become your new skin. They will be made with the use of a newly emerging technology called “Sleek Skin”, which seeks to emulate the texture of smooth, flawless, and blemish-free skin. It will be molded into every contour of your face, and will blend in seamlessly with you. The mask’s fibers and your facial tissues will intertwine in a harmonious manner, resulting in your new face. After the surgical operation, your face and your new mask will become one. There is absolutely zero discomfort, and it’ll feel like your skin, but better. The masks are designed by the users, and they can express their creativity and inner beauty through their mask art. After users put on their masks(hopefully permanently), they will all have new faces that are unique and satisfying for themselves. Now, no one can judge them based on their natural looks. Also, if users end up getting tired of wearing the same mask the entire time, then they can go and get it surgically removed, redesign it, and attach it back on. They also won’t have to worry about washing their faces, or having a lot of acne and skin problems, because the mask uses self-cleaning material and it’ll cover up any skin issues.

At this point you may be going “hurrah! All of my prayers have been answered”! And that is true(only if the government approves of this), but it is not only for you guys, my dearly beloved ugly readers. The “Healthy Lookism Filter” will be made for everyone to use, regardless of the status of your face in society. The thing is, many of you may not realize this, but pretty people are often put on a pedestal and expected to achieve success, which can and will lead to immense pressure, and many of them are tired of that. Besides that, they also have to constantly deal with a lot of unwarranted jealousy and bitterness from people who are deemed as less attractive than them. Sometimes, they are also automatically deemed as being vain and arrogant, solely because of the fact that they are beautiful. Additionally, for many of them, their value as a person becomes rooted in their appearance. They are often judged, and in some ways, their lives can be quite difficult too. And that is why the “Healthy Lookism Filter” is created for everyone to use, because everyone just needs to stop judging each other, and live a bias-free life.

Of course, after reading this entire portion(if you’ve even made it this far), you probably think that I am being quite strange. But I do not think that I am making any remotely outrageous claims. In fact, it is simply not at all out of the ordinary to present a well-thought out solution with good intentions to people in need. Even if this plan doesn’t end up coming true, at least I still tried my very best to come up with an ideal situation in which all biases based on looks are gone. However, what can actually realistically be done to make a change is people’s attitudes. We need to start with changing our hearts, and looking deep within ourselves to acquire a greater understanding of what beauty truly is. Beauty isn’t just on the outside, but it is also on the inside, and there are various aspects of beauty (Vocal beauty (pretty voice), brain beauty(intelligence), attitude beauty (kindness), acceptance beauty (open- mindedness), etc). While all of this is good and true, I have no plans to actually pitch this idea to the government, because this idea is clearly too shockingly jarring. This entire article is simply written just because. Furthermore, I would never recommend that you try the “Healthy Lookism Filter”, because it would be quite disastrous to your skin and muscles, and could potentially cause facial paralysis and the disfiguration of your face.
