Book 4: My Eyes Are Up Here

Note: This is a review that I did in 2021 as part of my volunteering at a local library, so this has actually been posted online elsewhere.

Overall Assessment

This book was super cringey, but kinda cute in certain places. It was also kind of all over the place.

Plot Summarization

Maude and Mavis are annoying asf. They constantly bother and are a huge source of pain to Greer. Who are Maude and Mavis? Well, they’re boobs! Very big ones! Let’s start from the beginning. Greer Walsh is a 15 year old girl who has really really big boobs. She is obsessed with them, and thinks about them all of the time. She absolutely hates them, which is why she names them Maude and Mavis, two names that she considers ugly. Her obsession leads to a lot of problems with her life, particularly with boys and volleyball. She then meets a guy named Jackson Oates, who sees her for her brains and personality instead of her body. Then, a lot of drama ensues.

Likes and Dislikes

I liked that the main character was genuine, and that she was quirky. However, my dislike is that sometimes she was way too quirky, to the point where it was uncomfortable to read. I got a lot of secondhand embarrassment. The main character would often go in depth about her pubic hair and her sexual fantasies revolving around a boy that she had just met. Her friend and side character was equally weird. I am impressed that these two girls managed to find each other.

How well the book presented specific story characteristics

The book did a good job of describing imagery. It went very in depth about Greer’s body, and the clothes she wore. I now know pretty much exactly what Greer looks like. It also was very specific about her prom dress, and how pretty the blue fabric was.

What kind of reader would like the book, and my rating out of 5

I believe that this is best suited for young teens, because it can kind of get immature sometimes. Also, quirky people would probably enjoy it the best, because this book is the definition of quirky. My rating out of 5 would be a 2. Honestly, the book was objectively really badly written, but since it entertained me, I’ll give it a 3 out of 5.
